Rules '10

So, this MARCH MADNESS! thing intrigues you, huh? You think you're interested in joining? Well, before you do, I suggest you read over the rules. (Last updated 2/28/10)

General Rules:

-This challenge is meant for fun! Don't sweat it too much. :3

-The goal is to draw 31 pages within the month of March, or the equivelant of one comic per day. This does NOT mean you have to update each day or draw each day. You can do 5 pages one day if you'd like, even! (Or procrastinate until the end and find yourself stressed out.) The choice is yours!

-To keep things simple, here follows the dates and times for MARCH MADNESS! events.

  • March 1st, 12:00 AM GST +5 (Eastern Time): You may begin drawing!
  • March 3rd, 12:00 AM GST +5 (Eastern Time): All applications to participate will close.
  • April 1st, 12:00 AM GST +5 (Eastern Time): Pencils DOWN! MARCH MADNESS! is over!
  • April 1st, 12:00 PM GST +5 (Eastern Time): Late entry cutoff point! (Because I know some of you want to sleep.)
  • April ??: Successful challengers and honorable mentions will be displayed in a News post that will be displayed on the front Page of Smackjeeves!
-Be respectful and supportive to your other fellow competitors. Just because you don't like something does NOT mean you have to open your trap about it. We can and will kick you if you don't constructively critique something.

Comic Rules:

-A comic consists of characters/backgrounds, basic compositioning and speech bubbles (or thoughts). You MUST have all of these on all 31 of your submitted comics. This includes text.

-You don't have to enter a pre-existing comic, but if you want to, by all means, go right ahead!

-You can work on more than one comic at once to keep things fresh for you.

-Comic lines are to be very clean (meaning they can't look like a bunch of circles/we should be able to make out the characters). Pencil is allowed as a media so long as the lines are kept clean. Inking is optional but highly preferred. Digital works, so long as they aren't stick figures or sprite comics, are also allowed.

-Coloring and toning is NOT needed! So long as we can make out what's going on in the page, you're free to do whatever you want to the pages, even just leaving it BW.

-You may prepare for the comic by outlining what you are going to do in your 31 pages, or by thumbing something out really roughly. You MUST begin drawing March 1st, and NOT before then!

Submission Rules:

-No mature content, please and thank you. All drugs, sex, excessive gore and other mature things should be taken away please. Also try and limit your use of swearing here. A quick word edit would do nicely for your entries here.

-Please make a chapter for yourself below the latest person's. It should look something like this: 'MM10 - UserNameHere'. This is the easiest way to keep check on how you're progressing on MM!

-Do NOT mess around with other people's chapters! Doing this will result in you getting kicked from the challenge and possibly further punishment from the Smackjeeves Administration team. If something looks wrong or out of place, PLEASE PM either me or Czar Squid. We'll take care of it.

-Please submit only to your chapter.

Team Rules:

-People joining together should note that they are joining together.

-This is allowed so long as BOTH teammates are doing their fair share of work. For example, Team Member A should do clean pencils/inks, where Team Member B should do the coloring/screentoning/texts. Or, you should each be doing 31 pages. Whatever suits you, you're expected to show more ability given you have two people and can thus split up your time better.

-You're responsible for managing your time with your partner. You may have to do more than one page per day to make the deadline.

Rewards Rules:

-Czar Squid is the leader for all MARCH MADNESS!-Smackjeeves related rewards. What he says goes.

-All comics must be submitted at the given time to be announced as winners in a news post.

-Honorable mentions will be given for those who submit lots during the challenge but don't reach the end.

-There may also be special honorable mentions for those who do team efforts.

-Please see this news post for more information.

================================================================= FAQ

Can I submit one-shot comics for this challenge?

So long as the one-shot comic (IE, a standalone comic) looks professional and looks like you took time to do it, yeah. I don't want to see silly little filler pages though.

What constitutes as filler?

Splash pages that have little chubby misproportioned characters and that's it. Also, something that looks like it was rushed. Because splash pages often don't have to worry about text or something of the like, you are expected to put more time into the actual drawing aspect of it. Can I make pencil buffer before the challenge starts?

No, because that defeats the purpose of the challenge. I understand inking takes a while, but that's why we're allowing pencil lines as a method of entry. You start drawing AFTER March 1st rolls over, NO exceptions. You can always go back and ink it later.

I have a pre-existing buffer going on for my comic...what do I do?

PM either myself (Crystal Hikara) or Czar Squid with what you have for your buffer. You'll be asked to draw a page above what you have as your first comic.

Too bad you guys have no way of proving that we don't have buffer, don't you?

We have our ways. If you are found out to be cheating, we'll find ways to scorn you and humiliate you in front of the entire community. ;D

My comic is DEFINITELY R-Rated and I DON'T feel like censoring my work, pansies.

If you have some sort of R-rated comic, please ONLY post up the pages that do not have drugs, sex, excessive gore and other mature things. Link up to your chapter somewhere with a prefix of 'WARNING: R-Rated Material Ahead!'. Some of us don't want to see BL/GL or any of the other prevailing elements here. SO DON'T DO IT. We have the right to kick you if you don't follw with these rules.

I don't feel like submitting a certain page to my chapter because it may contain spoilers. What do I do?

PM either myself (Crystal Hikara) or Czar Squid about it. We do need to see all 31 pages before you get your name up on the News Post of Awesome.

What if I don't feel like submitting my comics at all to this crazy event or even on the internet?

You're free to join us for the challenge, but unless you can show either myself or Czar your comic, you cannot be added to the winner's newspost.

I can't cope! I want out! D:

It's okay! The best part about this challenge is that you have nothing to lose. At least you can say you tried.

...oh god, why does it say 'Welcome to MARCH MADNESS! 10'?! Don't tell me that I'm stuck in this damned thing for many years to come?!

This craaaziness will be hosted EEEEEEVERY YEAR. Of course you're not expected to join back in next year, but it'd be nice to see you again for the fun. :3

Can I submit sprite comics to this?

Nope, the aim is to get hand-drawn comics done. Sprite comics don't count because you're just...copy pasting things into place. While some sprite comics can be a real artform, oftentimes people are skilled enough as it is getting a page done a day.

I'm getting into this insanity...CAN I BE SUPER CRAZY AND DO MORE THAN ONE PAGE A DAY?! :D

Sure! I like that kinda spirit! Destroy that deadline!! There may be even special prizes for those who go above and beyond the call of duty in terms of MM! Maybe. It's still up in the air. But yeah, take advantage of this challenge all you can!

So I heard something about SEPTEMBER SUICIDE!. You're an awful person you know that?

Dude sorry, there's not a lot of good synonyms for crazinesss the letter 's'. >_> SS! may be another comic challenge month for those who find themselves too bogged down with school stuff right now. It's still up in the air, so lemme know if you guys will be interested!
